Catholics begin the penitential season of Lent on Wednesday, February 17, by observing a centuries-old ritual that uses ashes to symbolize repentance from sin.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, it’s still a mostly online Ash Wednesday for many Catholics. The tradition of marking foreheads with ashes has also been replaced, for now, with the sprinkling of ashes on churchgoers’ heads.

In the Philippines, one of the country’s most prominent Catholic bishops – Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio “Ambo” David, vice president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – is leading a Mass at 9 am on Ash Wednesday.
