MANILA, Philippines – Severe Tropical Storm Nona (international name Melor), a typhoon at its strongest, weakened into a tropical storm on Wednesday night, December 16.
In its bulletin issued 11 pm on Wednesday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Nona’s maximum winds are down to 85 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, with gustiness of up to 100 km/h.
Nona was last spotted 75 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales, moving north at 8 km/h.
Only two areas are under signal #1: Pangasinan and Zambales. Storm warning signals elsewhere have been lifted.
Estimated rainfall amount, however, is still moderate to heavy within the 250-kilometer diameter of the tropical storm.
At the height of Nona’s onslaught, at least 11 people died, according to reports from local disaster management officials.
On Friday, December 18, Nona is expected to weaken further into a Low Pressure Area.
But the Philippines is also dealing with Tropical Depression Onyok, which slightly intensified on Wednesday night and is heading for Mindanao. – Rappler.com
