Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently held engagements that sought to further enhance diplomatic relations with Southeast Asian nations.

International observers see these meetings with key figures as China’s way of fixing its image in the aftermath of allegations of a cover-up in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. These meetings were also held amid the heightened tension between China and the United States.

On Tuesday, October 20, Rappler editor at large Marites Vitug talks to Murray Hiebert from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) about Southeast Asian countries dealing with China in recent years and what the future holds for China-Southeast Asia relations.

Hiebert is a senior associate of the Southeast Asia program at the United States-based CSIS, and also the head of research for BowerGroupAsia. He is the author of a recently-published book, Under Beijing’s Shadow:  Southeast Asia Challenge.

How are Southeast Asian countries dealing with the China-US tensions?
