MANILA, Philippines – The Red Lions will celebrate the new year with a new coach.
Former Philippine Basketball Association player and head coach Boyet Fernandez will have another crack at collegiate basketball after being named the new head coach of the San Beda Red Lions.
Fernandez, who coached the UP Fighting Maroons in 2010, has been chosen to replace Ronnie Magsanoc. Magsanoc led the Red Lions to their 17th NCAA championship last year.
Fernandez’ appointment was confirmed in a post shared by the San Beda Red Lions facebook page. It was posted after veteran photographer Gider Malabute broke the news to the page.
The announcement is met by welcome support from the San Beda community. Red Lions fans expressed their admiration online.

Fernandez was among the favorites to take the job following a recommendation from business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan.
Fernandez will attempt to balance his new job with his other coaching duties. He will continue to serve as head coach of the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA D-League while acting as assisting coach for the Meralco Bolts in the PBA.
With Fernandez at the helm, the Red Lions are geared up for their quest in their fourth consecutive NCAA championship this year. – Rappler.com
