MANILA, Philippines – Filipino chess grandmaster Wesley So is $100,000 richer after winning first place in the Millionaire Chess Open championships at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Monday, October 13.

So, 21, defeated his Webster University teammate Roby Robson for his third major championship this year, following his wins at the Capablanca Memorial tournament in Cuba in May and the ACP Golden Classic in Italy this past July.

So, who is rated number 10 in the world by FIDE, has had a standout year at the chess table, reaching the highest ranking a Filipino player has achieved but struggling in his bid to switch from the National Chess Federation of the Philippines to the US Federation, where he believes greater opportunities exist.

To gain his release, So would have to pay 50,000 Euros or be ineligible for FIDE tournaments for two years. – Rappler.com
