Nonito Donaire Sr., who once trained Manny Pacquiao, says the Filipino boxing icon will overwhelm Errol Spence with his latent speed and power

Nonito Donaire Sr. has a bold prediction for Manny Pacquiao’s upcoming fight against Errol Spence Jr.

The father and former trainer of Nonito Donaire, the World Boxing Council bantamweight champion, believes Pacquiao will be able to stop Spence in the early rounds of their welterweight title encounter at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 22 (Manila time).

Clearly, the elder Donaire isn’t in awe of Spence’s clean slate (27-0 with 21 knockouts) as he hasn’t fought a boxer of Pacquiao’s mold.

“When he fights a guy with speed and power, we’ll see. I think Manny will knock him out in the early rounds. Maybe in the first six rounds, that’s the most,” the elder Donaire told FightHype on Sunday, July 4, shortly after Pacquiao’s arrival at the Los Angeles International Airport from Manila. “It’s very dangerous for him (Spence) because for me when he fought Mikey Garcia, Mikey was way too small for him. He didn’t hurt Garcia.”

Donaire Sr feels Pacquiao’s latent speed and power will overwhelm the defending champion Spence, who is bigger but slower in the pay-per-view bout for his World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation welterweight crowns.

“I think before Spence can react, Manny can hit him right away because of the speed. Spence doesn’t have the speed that Manny has,” said Donaire Sr., who trained Nonito and older brother Glenn since they were young.

Donaire Sr. knows Pacquiao’s capability as he was among the eight-division champion’s trainers in 2018, when Pacquiao wrested the World Boxing Association title from Argentine Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

MP (Manny Pacquiao) Promotions president Sean Gibbons led a group of supporters who fetched Pacquiao at the airport and brought him to his house in Los Angeles, where more people were waiting.

After greeting his well-wishers and eating, Pacquiao went to his room upstairs to rest his travel-weary body.

On Monday, the hard grind begins at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood where chief trainer Freddie Roach and strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune will be waiting for him. – Rappler.com
