The Democratic National Convention, the United States’ first-ever virtual national convention, continues with a show of unity behind Joe Biden, the party’s presidential candidate.

This weeklong convention is where the Democratic Party formally nominates Biden as US presidential candidate, and Kamala Harris as his running mate. Their tandem is out to challenge US President Donald Trump, who has become increasingly unpopular most recently due to his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

The event kicked off Monday, August 17 (Tuesday, August 18, Manila time), with former first lady Michelle Obama delivering a rousing speech that went all-out against President Donald Trump.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter spoke on the second day of the convention. Clinton slammed Trump for making the White House a “storm center” instead of a command center.

The lineup of speakers for Wednesday, August 19 (Thursday, August 20, Manila time) include former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, Harris, and former president Barack Obama. Biden served as Obama’s vice president from 2009 to 2017.

The party has already formally nominated Biden as presidential candidate, and he will deliver a formal acceptance speech at the conclusion of the convention. – Rappler.com
