MANILA, Philippines – Imagine being castigated for who you are, kicked out of your own home, denied communion, or banned from entering commercial establishments, all because of a label – a label of who you are, a label that defines part of you, a label that identifies who you prefer to love. Yes, that kind of labeling.

When talking about whipping out labels, there’s no community more familiar with this ubiquitous exercise than the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. To be called “Bakla!” that comes with a spit, to be sneered at with “Kadiri!” that goes along with it, to be secretly avoided as they whisper “Tibo!” behind your back – harmless words that are given weight when spoken with varying degrees of contempt. Yes, that kind of labeling. LGBTQs know this all too well.

To continue our #WhipIt discussions on challenging labels and stereotypes, the first week of our Women’s Month celebration will address issues and concerns of people who are always left out of the mainstream of society. While there are already a handful of prominent LBTQ women speaking out from the community, this doesn’t mean that voices are not silenced on a daily basis.
