MANILA, Philippines – The first name “Peabo Bryson” may strike you as interesting, but it doesn’t come close to the person who owns it.

Peabo Bryson Orilla is another member of the Panty Monsters. He plays host or master of ceremonies in the events they produce. He also plays a key role in the production of their parody videos online. He’s also their resident make-up artist, having worked in MAC Cosmetics at SM Mall of Asia.

I sat down with Peabo while he was waiting for his turn to the make-up chair, at their shoot with RAPPLER. He smiled eagerly, and shared how glad he was that he didn’t have to do their make-up this time.

It was after watching the Ms. Universe pageant in 1994 that Peabo realized he wasn’t going to be the second “man” of the family. Being the eldest child of the family and an only son, his revelation came as a shock to his family. His parents were unable to come to terms with his orientation until he was in 2nd year high school.

Like other stories commonly heard in Peabo’s situation, it was his father who was affected the most, but Peabo eventually grew used to it. Although their relationship remained aloof for some time, Peabo and his dad started to bond anew through tutorials Peabo would give his dad about Facebook, introducing his father to the wonders of social networking.

High school was an eventful time in Peabo’s life. Asked if he ever experienced discrimination for his gender, he is quick to say “no.” He adds that even his straight classmates were excited to be friends with him.

In college, he took up Mass Communication major in Broadcast Communication at (the then) Trinity College, but when he landed a job with MAC, he eventually chose to working full-time. He admits that — while he enjoyed his productions classes — he couldn’t imagine going through his Journalism subjects and doing his thesis.

Peabo’s production and hosting skills prove handy for the Panty Monsters. Their video series, Ows Tokyo?! (a parody of the popular ’90s show Oh-Tokyo) is a collection of funny videos where Peabo hosts various parties and events in his own comical way. His crazy antics will keep you wanting to watch more.

Ows Tokyo?! also shows how Peabo and his fellow Panty Monsters enjoy every minute of their lives as they let themselves loose wherever they go, whatever they do, regardless of what other people may think.

Peabo’s ultimate dream is to get into production, doing behind-the-scenes work and maybe even hosting bits.

(The PANTY MONSTERS are a renegade group of fashion, music and art practitioners and lovers. They advocate equality and respect for all, regardless of sexual orientation or clothing size. They have strong personalities but also have the biggest hearts; their minds a bottomless trove of ideas. They live and love beyond the norm because, for them, to not be normal does not equate to being evil — there is nothing wrong with being different. The PANTY MONSTERS are all about keeping it real, because “real” is the new sexy.)
