Rappler reporter Pia Ranada speaks with Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana about the future of the Visiting Forces Agreement, President Rodrigo Duterte’s leadership and governance style, and the challenges and controversies facing the defense and security sector.
Lorenzana has been one of the constants in Duterte’s Cabinet and has worn many hats for the President – as his martial law administrator, pandemic task force chief, and disaster management go-to guy.
His department oversees government initiatives Duterte personally champions – the crackdown on communists, fight versus terrorism, and bolstering the military and its personnel – but also issues Duterte has been slippery on, like taking a firm stance against Chinese aggression in the West Philippines.
