Two of the country’s strongest junior chess players finally got into the national team for the FIDE Online Cadets and Youth Rapid Championship through wild cards.

Daniel Quizon and Kylen Joy Mordido joined 4 others for the 6 wild card berths in the tournament, which opens with a selection stage on November 27, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) said on Wednesday, November 18.

Quizon will compete in the Under-16 event after losing the Under-18 final eliminations last Sunday. Mordido, who lost in the Under-18 qualifier, will play in the same age group. 

Paul Matthew Llanilo, who scored an upset over Quizon in Sunday’s U18 playoff, will also see action for the country along with Jarel Lacambra, who beat Mordido in the U18.

They will be joined by Al-Basher Buto – who only finished 5th in the U10 but was nominated by head coach Eugene Torre for the berth – and April Joy Claros in the U14

Also given wildcards were Panabo City’s Christian Gian Karlo Arca, the country’s newest Arena Grandmaster, in the U12 and Oshrie Jhames Constantino Reyes, aged 9, who was 4th in the U10.
