Javi and Juan Gomez de Liaño brought their brotherly exploits from the local ranks to the international scene as Gilas Pilipinas swept Thailand in the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers.
The Gomez de Liaños combined for 33 points in the Philippines' 93-69 win over Thailand in the second of their two encounters in Manama, Bahrain.
"I feel very happy for both of us," Javi told Rappler.
"Of course, whenever me and Juan are on the court, winning is always on our mind and we just do what our coaches tell us to do," he added.
The two punished Thailand with their outside sniping as they accounted for half of Gilas Pilipinas' 16 three-pointers, with Javi shooting a perfect 4-of-4 and Juan going 4-of-6 from long distance.
Javi finished with a team-high 19 points and 2 rebounds, while Juan chalked up 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
They also keyed the Philippines' breakaway in the third quarter, scoring 7 points in a decisive 11-2 run that buried Thailand by 23 points, 75-52, going into the last frame.
"It just so happened that in the course of the rotation, they played together," said Gilas Pilipinas head coach Jong Uichico when asked if he intended to have the brothers share the court.
"They do have good chemistry," Uichico added.
Gilas Pilipinas will proceed to the third and final window of the qualifiers at the top of Group A with a 3-0 record. – Rappler.com
