UE appeals unsportsmanlike foul on Charles Mammie
University of the East Red Warriors head coach Derrick Pumaren says that UE has appealed the unsportsmanlike foul called on center Charles Mammie

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East Red Warriors head coach Derrick Pumaren has confirmed to Rappler that UE has appealed the unsportsmanlike foul called on center Charles Mammie during the team’s game against the De La Salle Green Archers on Sunday, July 27.

“We sent a letter last night (Monday, July 28). We felt that it was not an unsportsmanlike foul,” Pumaren said.

The call was assessed by one of the game’s officials in the first quarter of the DLSU-UE match, which the former would go on to win, 60-58.

Mammie was battling under the rim with Arnold Van Opstal before the play happened, and the unsportsmanlike foul was called during a dead ball.

“We felt it was a shoulder bump lang,” added Pumaren, whose Red Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, July 30, to take on the Far Eastern University Tamaraws at the Mall of Asia Arena.

UE is looking to bounce back after surrendering a 10-point lead on the fourth quarter to La Salle on Sunday, and to avoid falling to a 2-2 record.

According to the champion head coach, it wasn’t fatigue that was the reason why his club melted late against the defending champions.

“I don’t think we got tired,” noted Pumaren. “I don’t think we were playing good defense.”

He also said that “it was not a good offensive night.” – Rappler.com
