In late May, several areas in Luzon were affected by power outages as some coal plants were on forced shutdown.
But the May shutdown was not an isolated case. Year in and year out, Filipinos have to suffer from blackouts due to unplanned outages leading to tight power supply.
There has been finger-pointing – the government insists there should be more reserves, while some maintain that reserves are not the answer.
The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) points to the intermittency of coal plants, a number of which are over 15 years old. Coal plants compose about half of the Philippines’ energy mix.
Rappler reporters Aika Rey and Ralf Rivas will talk to ICSC energy transition advisor Alberto Dalusung III and chief data scientist Jephraim Manansala on making the case for energy transition.
