MANILA, Philippines – Days after the killing of radio journalist Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said it has identified a person of interest and put a P1.5-million bounty on his head.
In a press briefing on Friday, October 7, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) released the photo of the person of interest. Police identified the person by watching available CCTV videos in the area where Mabasa was killed.
Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, whose agency oversees the PNP, called on the person of interest to surrender. Abalos added the PNP has already provided security detail for Mabasa’s family.
“Sa taong nasa larawan na ito, ito lang ang masasabi ko…. Ang pinakamagandang gawin mo sumuko ka at pabayaan mong mag-take over na ang kapulisan dito (For the person in the photo, all I can say is, the best thing you can do is to surrender and let the police takeover from here),“ Abalos said.
Mabasa was killed in Las Piñas City on Monday – the second media worker slain during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term. The slain radio commentator was a staunch critic of the Marcos and Duterte administrations.
Aside from the NCRPO, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and local police are following Mabasa’s case, according to the DILG.
The NCRPO said people who have leads can reach out to Las Piñas police on the contact details below:
Cellphone: 0947-462-2859 or 0998-598-7928
Telephone: 8808-7935 or 8525-8403
