The project is among the top 10 finalists chosen out of 1,200 entries
Liter of Light from the Philippines is one of the top-10 selected projects competing for the international green accolade, Sustainia Award. Headed by Arnold Schwarzenegger and the chair of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the award-giving body recognizes projects with significant potential to help build a sustainable future.

In solving the energy problem where over 15 million Filipinos are affected, Illac Diaz’s My Shelter Foundation came up with a simple solution – bottling the sunlight. Using plastic bottles, sunlight is captured for use inside off-grid housing. Liter of Light has since grown to provide 350,000 bottle lamps to 10 countries after it was launched 20 months ago.

The 10 finalists for the award were selected by the Sustainia100 Advisory Board out of 1200 entries around the world.

“The Top-10 Sustainia projects reflect innovative approaches that can lead to more sustainable industries. Hopefully, they will inspire more businesses to take green practicing to heart. It is not an easy choice to select one, but I’m looking forward to presenting the Sustainia Award winner in Copenhagen,” says Dr. Rajendra Pachauri.

Online voting for the People’s Choice Award where a Liter of Light is a finalist is until October 30, 2013. Know more about the Liter of Light Project here and help the project win the award by voting for them on Facebook
