All in one day on Wednesday, November 24, Lakas-CMD formalized its plans and alliances for the 2022 national elections.
The party, in a virtual executive committee meeting, passed three resolutions that formalized its vice presidential bet, its adopted presidential candidate, and its allies for the coming elections.
In a media release, the party said it formally adopted Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos Jr as its presidential candidate and authorized his cousin, Lakas-CMD president and Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, to form alliances with other political parties.
Resolution 09, series of 2021, “confirmed and affirmed” the choice of Davao Mayor Sara Duterte as the party’s vice presidential candidate for 2022. Duterte, the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, filed her candidacy for vice president through substitution via withdrawal on November 13. This move came days after she cancelled her reelection bid as Davao mayor and joined the party – all these happening on the sidelines of a political ally’s daughter’s wedding.
The younger Duterte has since taken on a leadership role in Lakas-CMD, as co-chairperson alongside Senator Bong Revilla. The resolution also authorized Sara to pick her presidential bet for 2022.
The next resolution formalized the party’s adoption of Marcos as presidential candidate. “Whereas, as Chairman of Lakas-CMD, Mayor Sara Zimmerman Duterte was given the authority and power to choose her presidential running mate,” the Lakas-CMD resolution read.
Moving forward, Romualdez now has the authority to negotiate alliances on behalf of Lakas-CMD. They will then be confirmed by the party’s national executive committee.
In a Facebook post, Sara Duterte said the signing of the “Uniteam Alliance” among Lakas-CMD, PFP, the Davao-based Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), and PMP is set on November 25. HNP is a regional party that Sara Duterte founded and chairs.
The Sara-led Lakas-CMD is unlikely to ally with at least one major national party, if previous pronouncements are any indication. PDP-Laban, a party chaired by President Duterte, earlier rejected Lakas-CMD’s ask – to support a Marcos-Sara Duterte ticket in 2022.
PDP-Laban is fielding Senator Bong Go, President Duterte’s long-time aide, as its presidential candidate. Despite Sara’s choice of Marcos as presidential bet and PDP-Laban rejecting Lakas-CMD’s office, Go said that he would be supporting Sara’s vice presidential run.
Go was originally set to run for vice president under PDP-Laban but withdrew and moved up to president hours after Sara filed her vice presidential candidacy. Go, however, is now running under Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan because of unresolved “leadership issues” in PDP-Laban. – Rappler.com
