Voices from the Regions: How justice finally caught up with a pedophile
Rappler talks to Northern Mindanao Regional State Prosecutor Merlynn Barola-Uy about what it took to make a pedohile and his accomplices pay for their monstrosity

A regional court in Cagayan de Oro meted Australian pedophile Peter Gerard Scully a prison term of 129 years more on November 3, four years after he was sentenced to life imprisonment for human trafficking and a maximum of 45 years for five counts of rape.

Sending him and his Filipino accomplices to jail wasn’t an easy task. It took seven grueling years of prosecution work to build more than 60 air-tight criminal cases against one of the worst child sexual abusers ever caught and tried in the Philippines.

Northern Mindanao Regional State Prosecutor Merlynn Barola-Uy talks to Rappler Mindanao regional coordinator Herbie Gomez and regions head Inday Espina-Varona about what it took to make Scully and his accomplices pay for their monstrosity.

Watch the discussion during Rappler’s Voices from the Regions at 7 pm on Friday, November 18. – Rappler.com
