Former UAAP MVP Bright Akhuetie plays limited minutes as Nigeria loses its first game in the FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers

Bright Akhuetie barely saw action as Nigeria dropped its opening game in the FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers against Cape Verde, 79-71, at Pavilhao Multiusos Acacias Rubras in Angola on Friday, November 26.

Debuting for Nigeria, the former UAAP MVP tallied 1 rebound and 1 turnover after playing just 1:40 minutes in the loss.

Nigeria led 55-51 through three quarters before Cape Verde caught fire, unloading 28 points in the payoff period as it seized an early lead in Group A with a 1-0 record.

Anderson Correia led the way for Cape Verde with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Joel Almeida churned out 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Jeffrey Nunes Xavier and Ivan Almedia also delivered in the victory with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Former NBA veteran Ike Diogu chalked up 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals as the top performer for Nigeria.
