UP men’s basketball star Ricci Rivero once again tops the Philippine sport scene in Twitter for 2020

In a year unlike any other for sports, Twitter Philippines revealed the list of the most tweeted about sports accounts in the country for 2020.

Despite the absence of the highly-anticipated UAAP men’s basketball this year, Ricci Rivero of the UP Fighting Maroons is the most tweeted about sports account in the Philippines for 2020.

Rivero, who is also now part of the musical variety show Sunday Noontime Live in TV5, made waves in August and trended for his tweet exchanges with fellow UP Fighting Maroon CJ Cansino, who happens to be second on the list.

The Twitter exchange between the two came on August 20, minutes after news broke out that Cansino parted ways with the UST Growling Tigers.

On August 21, Cansino, who made headlines after the controversial UST bubble, officially joined Rivero and the Fighting Maroons. The latter welcomed the former on Twitter, saying “See you bro,” which gathered over 10,000 retweets and a whopping 58,700 likes.

The series of tweets between the two UAAP superstars eventually made them the top 2 most tweeted about sports accounts in the country.

Third and fourth on the list are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat, the protagonist in this year’s NBA Finals.

Although the league went on pause, and looked a bit different when it returned to a bubble setup in July, the return of the NBA season easily became the talk of the town.

The Los Angeles Lakers, which has 9.4 million followers on Twitter, made noise in 2020 after capturing their first NBA championship since 2010.

Filipino basketball fans all over the country witnessed LeBron James and Anthony Davis dominate in the Finals, where the Lakers eliminated the Heat in 6 games.

The Miami Heat, on the other hand, made some buzz following their incredible playoff run, where they thrashed the Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics en route to their surprise NBA Finals appearance.

Completing the top 5 is the Golden State Warriors, which has 6.5 million followers on Twitter, the second most followed NBA team after the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Warriors made quite some noise in November, after it was announced that Warriors star Klay Thompson suffered a season-ending torn Achilles.

“This year, people have used Twitter not just to keep up with what’s happening around the world, but to maintain connections with one another despite being apart,” said Arvinder Gujral, Twitter Southeast Asia managing director, adding that the “challenging circumstances of 2020” highlighted the social media platform’s “role in driving real-time conversations.” – Rappler.com
