(UPDATED) MANILA, Philippines -A major 7.4 magnitude earthquake registered off the coast of El Salvador triggered a tsunami on Monday, August 27.

The Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami alert for Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico.

The quake struck about 118 km south from city of Usultan at a depth of 52 km, according to the US Geological Survey.

No casualties have been reported so far and a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was initially not expected.
