SB19 is the lone Filipino act nominated

The nominees for the 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) are in, and SB19 is the only Filipino act that made it to the list.

The five-piece pop group is among the six nominees under the Best Southeast Asia Act category. Other nominees include Ink Waruntorn (Thailand), JJ Lin (Singapore), K-ICM (Vietnam), Lyodra (Indonesia), and Naim Daniel (Malaysia).

The Best Southeast Asia Act award was added to the EMAs in 2013. Local EMA categories provide viewers and fans the chance to pick the best local act in their region.

Past Filipino nominees include Ben&Ben, Nadine Lustre, James Reid, Moira dela Torre, and Sarah Geronimo. Geronimo was nominated thrice, and won the award in 2014.

Fans can start voting for SB19 on MTV EMA’s website starting Wednesday, October 20, until November 10. The awards night will happen in Hungary on November 14 (November 15 in the Philippines) and will be broadcast live on MTV channels.

Justin Bieber led this year’s nominees with eight nods, including Best Artist and Best Song, followed by Doja Cat and Lil Nas X with six nominations each. The full list of nominees can be found here.

In April 2021, SB19 made history as the first Filipino act to be nominated for the Top Social Artist category in the Billboard Music Awards. They were nominated alongside pop star Ariana Grande and K-pop groups BTS, BLACKPINK, and SEVENTEEN.

Composed of Pablo, Stell, Josh, Justin, and Ken, SB19 is currently one of the biggest Filipino acts. The group, known for their hits “MAPA,” “What?” and “Hanggang sa Huli,” released their EP Pagsibol in July 2021. – Rappler.com
