Best Festival Costume

The festival costume worn by Carcar City’s lead dancer was awarded Best Festival Costume during the coronation night of Sinulog Festival Queen 2020.

Jane Darren Genobisa, festival queen of the Carcar City contingent, wore a costume inspired by the miraculous patroness of Lapu-Lapu City – a petite image of the Blessed Virgin Mary carrying the Sto Nino in her arms. Taking inspiration from the statue’s vestments, the costume includes a tunic with a hoop skirt which is paired with a mantle, veil, and topped off with a crown. Finishing the look is a back piece accessorized with LED lights to simulate the aureole that encircles the Madonna’s face.

The costume was made by  designer Aldo Loquinario of Argao, Cebu.

When asked to give a hint as to how heavy the costume was, Jane Darren said the backpiece alone weighed 25 kilos.

Days prior to the coronation night, the said costume got viral on social media and was praised by netizens for its creativity and visual impact.

“Just believe in yourself that you can,” Jane Darren responded when asked to give a message to the people who gave positive comments to her costume. “My designer didn’t think he could finish the costume last week and I played the role of ‘Birhen sa Regla,’” she added.

Aside from the Best Festival costume award, Genobisa also bagged the award for Best Solo Performance and finished second runner-up. – Rappler.com
