Swimming: NCR rakes in more golds, CALABARZON bet breaks record

DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan – National Capital Region swimmers continued to dominate the pool competitions, winning nine out of 16 gold medals today to hike their total to 21 in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa at the Dagupan Poolsite here.

CALABARZON followed with 4 golds, highlighted by Jose Marie Arcilla’s record-breaking swim, to keep in step with the Metro Manila bets after two days of swimming competitions.

Arcilla clocked in at 2:25.86 in the elementary boys 200m individual medley to shatter Banjo Borja’s seven-year record of 2:26.75.

“Tuwang tuwa po ako at very honored na na-break ko yung record (I was so happy and honored that I broke the record),” Arcilla told Rappler. “Next year, sa tingin ko po, gusto kong bumalik at mag-break ulit ng record (Next year, I want to come back and break more records).”

Day 1 double record-breaker Delia Cordero scored a mild upset when she topped the secondary girls 200m IM, finishing it in 2:35.89 to edge Maria Aresa Lipat of CALABARZON (2:33.99) and race favorite Catherine Bondad of NCR (2:35.95).

Alex Ngui hauled in his third gold of the tournament after winning the 100m freestyle with a time of 55.85 then teamed up with other NCR swimmers in the 400m medley.
