Four presidential candidates on Sunday, February 27, promised to raise the salary of healthcare workers who have been on the frontlines of the pandemic response.

During the CNN Philippines Presidential Debate on Sunday, moderator Pia Hontiveros asked four candidates – namely, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, Senator Panfilo Lacson, Senator Manny Pacuqiao, and physician Jose Montermayor Jr. – this question: “Under your leadership, what would you do to keep our nurses here, other than reinforcing the annual limit of 5,000 healthcare workers deployed abroad? In other words, how will you encourage them to stay home and make a living here instead of going overseas?”

Presidential candidates on Sunday, February 27, bared their plans for their first days in office if elected as chief executive of the country.

During CNN Philippines’ Presidential Debates, moderator Pinky Webb asked the candidates this question in a mix of English and Filipino: “If you become the 17th president of the Philippines, how soon would Filipinos feel the impact of your leadership? You see, our President in 2016 said that in three to six months he would wipe out drugs as well as end corruption. How about you?”

Nine of the 10 presidential candidates took part in the debates. Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the survey frontrunner who had skipped interviews and debates sponsored by major news organizations, didn’t show up at the CNN Philippines event.

The morning after the CNN Philippines Presidential Debate, presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo posted on her Facebook the notes she took down during the program to organize her answers.

Candidates were not allowed to bring a kodigo or a cheat sheet to the debate, nor were questions given in advance. They were given only blank sheets of paper and a pen.

“The challenge is always how to encapsulate all you need to say in the 1.5 minutes given to you. Good thing the organizers gave us a pen and some sheets of paper. Very useful in organizing my thoughts. Some of them I wasn’t able to use because they were not asked,” said Robredo.

Robredo said she tried anticipating some of the questions. “Kung ako ‘yung unang tinatawag, ‘di na ako nakakapag-notes dahil wala nang oras (If I was called first, I would not have been able to take notes because there would have been no time),” she said.

The presidential debate hosted by CNN Philippines on Sunday, February 27, gave some of the lesser known candidates a chance to introduce themselves to the voting public, but not all of them had a time to shine in the crowded stage.

Among the presidential aspirants whose survey numbers had yet to breach the one-percentage point mark as of January, according to pollster Pulse Asia, were Faisal Mangondato, Ernesto Abella, and Norberto Gonzales.
