Political clan members poised to win party-list seats

The Philippine party list continues to serve as a backdoor to Congress for members of political dynasties.

There are at least nine political clans with a chance to have more power via party-list seats, based on Rappler’s computation from partial, unofficial results from 98.17% of precincts reporting as of May 11, 12:05 pm.

595 precincts give zero votes to Robredo

Based on partial and unofficial results transmitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) transparency and media servers as of 12:45 pm on May 11, Rappler found that voters in numerous precincts either shunned or overwhelmingly supported the top two presidential contenders.

Robredo got zero votes in 595 precincts. Of these, 278 are in Sulu alone. She lost 270,600 votes in these precincts. Marcos also found no luck in 75 precincts, losing 27,872 votes in these precincts. Read more.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Presidential son Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte was so overwhelmed by his landslide victory in the May 9 elections that he posted a video message to thank those who supported his quest to succeed his sister Sara as Davao City mayor.

To become mayor was Sebastian’s childhood dream – he made it clear years ago in an entry in his grade school yearbook where he said, “I want to be a city mayor.”

Mark Alcala to succeed father as Lucena City mayor

The city board of canvassers proclaimed Mark Alcala (PDP-Laban) as winner in the mayoral race on Tuesday, May 10, retaining power within the family of outgoing Lucena City Mayor Roderick Alcala who also won his vice mayoral bid. 

Mark Alcala gained 104,216 votes over his six opponents: Mano Talaga, Sunshine Abcede, Philip Castillo, PM Rojo, Ed Zeta, and Pedrito Maralit. His father received 113,654 votes beating his main rival Nilo Villapando for vice mayor. 

In a Facebook post, Mark Alcala expressed his gratitude to his supporters: “Ang tagumpay ay hindi lang para sa akin, kundi para sa buong Lucena. Walang hanggang pasasalamat sa inyong tiwala at suporta. Patuloy niyo po akong samahan sa totoong laban. Mas lalo pa nating paunlarin ang ating mahal na lungsod.”

Alcala aims to boost the industrial and economic growth of the city and to continue his father’s social services programs.

First-time senatorial bets Robin Padilla, Raffy Tulfo to get Senate seats, as expected

As expected, action star Robin Padilla and television personality Raffy Tulfo – both first-time senatorial candidates – are set to join the Senate in the 19th Congress.

Padilla topped the senatorial race and with 26,454,562 votes while Tulfo, with 23,166,449 votes, landed in third spot, based on partial and unofficial canvassing results of 98.35% precincts reporting as of 12:15 pm on Friday, May 13.

Aklan congressional representatives win reelection bids

Both of Aklan’s reelectionist congressional district representatives were declared winners by the Provincial Board of Canvassers on Tuesday, May 10.

Aklan 1st District Representative Carlito S. Marquez (NPC) sealed a third and last term with 89,731 votes. He beat Batan Mayor Rodell Ramos (59,110 votes), Sanggguniang Panlalawigan member Harry Sucgang (9,710 votes), and former SP member Rodson Mayor (2,863 votes).

Aklan 2nd District Representative Teodorico “Ted” Haresco Jr. (NP) secured his seat for a second term with a landslide victory of 134,436 votes. His opponents are political neophytes in the congressional race: former Makato vice mayor Vide Mationg-Pamatian who garnered 11,130 votes, and Matt Wacan who got 8,206 votes.

Aklan’s 1st District is composed of the eastern municipalities of Altavas, Balete, Banga, Batan, Kalibo, Libacao, New Washington, and Madalag. Aklan’s 2nd District spans the western municipalities of Buruanga, Ibajay, Lezo, Nabas, Numancia, Malay, Makato, and Tangalan. – Terrence Masigon
