Scoring leader Schonny Winston leads the UAAP Season 85 MVP race after a sensational first-round run with La Salle

MANILA, Philippines – La Salle star guard Schonny Winston emerged as the early UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament top MVP candidate in the league rankings released on Sunday, October 30.

It is not even particularly close either as the graduating Fil-Am sensation amassed 84.429 statistical points (SPs) – the sole basis for MVP voting – over his nearest competitors, namely Ateneo’s Forthsky Padrigao (76.571), Green Archers’ teammate Evan Nelle (73.6), UP’s Carl Tamayo (72.714), and Ateneo’s reigning MVP Ange Kouame (71.571).

Despite ranking third, Nelle, however, may no longer be up for consideration after being suspended one game last Friday, October 28, after his third unsportsmanlike foul. Former Ateneo star Thirdy Ravena was disqualified in 2018 for the same reason.

UP’s ailing finals hero JD Cagulangan, who is currently second in SPs (78) with just one game played, will also likely be scrapped from the race for failing to meet the minimum 10 season games played.

Winston led the league in scoring, averaging 21.29 points per game (ppg) while also ranking ninth in assists with 3.57 apg, second in steals with 3.0 spg, and norming 6.14 rebounds after the first round.

Pardrigao ranked second in assists with 6.14 apg, seventh in steals with  2.14 spg, while also averaging 12.86 points and 4.43 rebounds.

Assist leader Nelle posted averages of 10.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 7.8 apg, and 2.4 spg, while Tamayo normed 14.86 ppg, 8.71 rpg, 2.0 apg, and 1.43 spg.

Kouame, the rebounding and shot blocking leader, had 11.43 ppg, 11.43 rpg, 2.29 apg, and 2.57 bpg.

Other notable names in the race include UE’s do-it-all forward Luis Villegas (70.429 SPs), Adamson lone star Jerom Lastimosa (68.857), Ateneo’s Dave Ildefonso (67.857), and UP’s Finals MVP Malick Diouf (66.143).

LJay Gonzales is FEU’s top representative at 12th place with 63.571 SPs, while streaking NU – as a testament to its balanced rotation – does not have a representative until the 18th spot, claimed by former high school MVP Jake Figueroa (56.286).

The second round of basketball hostilities continue this Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum following a one-day postponement due to the nationwide onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng. – Rappler.com
