A barangay chairman with alleged links to the Abu Sayyaf group was gunned down in Isabela City in Basilan, police said on Monday afternoon, May 10.

Jamiron Ajijon alias Jamirun Amigos, chairman of Barangay Marang in Sumisip town in Basilan was shot dead around 2 pm Monday while walking outside a food chain store in Isabela City, according to Major Shellamie Chang of the Zamboanga Peninsula regional police Public Information Office (PIO).

The unidentified assailant immediately fled after killing Ajijon, Chang added.

Meanwhile, the Isabela City police are now in hot pursuit of the suspect.

Chang added that the Zamboanga Peninsula regional police were investigating the incident. She said the motive of the killing is yet to be determined.

Ajijon was alleged to be a financier of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group in Basilan, according to a report of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in January.

On January 2021, joint operatives of the PCG and the Philippine National Police arrested Ajijon in Basilan for murder.

Ajijon was the prime suspect in the killing of Basilan businessman Roberto Musablin, who was slain on September 6, 2004.

Alijon was also believed to be the leader of the gun-for-hire group City Hunter, which was operating in Basilan. – Rappler.com
