Police say Nuri Jaari Ismael was an Abu Sayyaf surrenderer who later became a trusted aide in a military camp in Basilan

BASILAN, Philippines – A former Abu Sayyaf member who became a trusted aide in a military camp ran amok and killed a soldier and two civilians in Sumisip, Basilan, on Tuesday afternoon, October 11.

Police subsequently killed the suspect, 27-year-old Nuri Jaari Ismael, during a firefight in the village of Pamatsaken in Sumisip.

Authorities said Ismael was trying to escape when he fired at the police and soldiers who caught up with him.

Police alleged that Ismael grabbed the M16 rifle of an Army corporal from the 67th Infantry Battalion in Ettub, Sumisip, and shot him in the chest.

Authorities have yet to inform the soldier’s relatives of his death as of this posting.

According to the town police, Ismael also shot and killed two civilians – 28-year-old Alsaidi Abbilul, and 32-year-old Kannami Burung Jannatul – without any provocation as he fled.

Like the corporal, Abbilul and Jannatul died on the spot.
