Rappler’s Pia Ranada, Lian Buan among 8 panelists in prestigious journalism seminar

Board members of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) selected eight journalists, including Rappler Malacañang reporter Pia Ranada and justice reporter Lian Buan, to serve as panelists in a prestigious journalism seminar.

The Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar, which aims to recognize journalists for their excellent work, will be held online for the second year in a row on Thursday, October 14. The seminar begins at 9:30 am.

“The panel discussion will take up the radical changes in the news landscape, the issues of press freedom and democracy, and the place of news in Philippine society,” said the CMFR in an announcement on Monday, October 11.

Senior journalists on the CMFR board of trustees chose the following as panelists this year:

• Lian Buan, Rappler
• Camille Diola, Interaksyon and Philstar.com
• Christian Esguerra, ABS-CBN
• Edson Guido, ABS-CBN
• Franco Luna, Philstar.com
• Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN
• Pia Ranada, Rappler
• James Relativo, Philstar.com

The seminar is named after the late Jaime V. Ongpin, a press freedom advocate during the Marcos dictatorship.

Previous seminar panelists from Rappler were Rambo Talabong, Michael Bueza, Natashya Gutierrez, and Patricia Evangelista.

The CMFR will not award the Marshall McLuhan Fellowship this year.

“This year, the Embassy of Canada has decided not to name a Marshall McLuhan Fellow because the pandemic and travel restrictions postponed the study tour of Christian Esguerra of ABS-CBN who was selected for the program last year,” said the CMFR. – Rappler.com
