Inside the Industry x Kumu: Lesbian literature with ‘Tingle’
Dr. Jhoanna Lynn Cruz and the writers of Anvil Publishing's 'Tingle' discuss the difficulties of being a lesbian author in the Philippines

In Philippine publishing, queer stories – let alone lesbian stories – only seem to come out only every so often. Perhaps the last notable collection of such stories was 1994’s Ladlad anthology, which has since extended to three volumes.

To add to the canon, in 2015, Dr. Jhoanna Lynn Cruz set on compiling Tingle: Anthology of Pinoy Lesbian Writing. The newly released book from Anvil publishing is a collection of poems, stories, and essays written by lesbian authors from the Philippines and among the Filipino diaspora.

The vast collection is already an achievement given the dearth of Filipina authors who have come out as lesbian. This is one of the main reasons it took five years for such a book to be published.

Visibility is very important. In a way, books are revolutionary because we put our names and our faces on them.
