State agents in the Philippines are consistently under scrutiny for promoting and spreading disinformation through both official and personal channels on social media.

Rappler found police pages on Facebook that publish or amplify content from known sources of disinformation. Alex Monteagudo, director general of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, also has a history of sharing fake and wrong information from pages.

Military officials too use social media to throw baseless accusations against human rights defenders, activists, elected officials, and even celebrities, tagging them as part of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

On Thursday, October 29, the Newsbreak team will discuss the role of state agents in the promotion of disinformation online, and how this translates into their work on the ground.

The discussion with multimedia reporters Rambo Talabong and Camille Elemia and research and strategy head Gemma Bagayaua-Mendoza will be moderated by investigative desk head Chay Hofileña.

Is there any way to hold accountable the state agents who spread disinformation?
